Bar turning refers to the manufacture of rotationally symmetrical parts —such as screws, shafts and pins— by machining material supplied in bars or coils. The process uses cutting tools to remove material and is designed for series production.
The term comes from the French word “Décolletage” and refers to the final cutting operation in which the finished part is separated from the raw material bar. It originated in French-speaking Switzerland, where the industry has a strong presence.
